What Information Can a Photo Reveal?

A photo can disclose more than what's obviously in frame. Here's the fuller picture, split into what comes from embedded metadata and what comes from the visual content itself — two genuinely different sources, both worth understanding.

From metadata

• Exact location — GPS coordinates in EXIF, typically accurate to a few meters. See How GPS Location Is Stored in Photos.
• When it was taken — down to the second, plus time zone on some devices
• What device took it — make, model, sometimes the specific lens
• Who created or edited it — if IPTC or XMP creator fields were filled in
• What software touched it — camera firmware, editing apps, sometimes specific AI tools
• An embedded preview thumbnail — which can, in some editors, still show the original uncropped/unedited image even after the visible file was cropped or altered

From the visible content

Metadata removal doesn't touch any of this:

• Faces — of you and anyone else in frame, identifiable regardless of any metadata
• Location clues — street signs, storefronts, license plates, recognizable landmarks, distinctive architecture
• Reflections — windows, mirrors, sunglasses, even a shiny surface can capture more of a scene than the main subject
• Background details — mail with a visible address, a screen showing sensitive information, a calendar, a whiteboard

Why the distinction matters

These two categories require completely different responses.
